The 5th Grade Band is an extremely popular organization for Schiesher students to participate in. 82 % of 5th Grade Students over the past five years have joined the band. Mr. Dan Schraub teaches all band lessons during the school-day as well as full band rehearsals on Tuesdays after school. Mr. Scott Gumina assists with the Tuesday after-school rehearsals. The Fifth Grade band performs three concerts per year: one in December, one in March, and one in May.
Practicing at Home
Your child will receive a "practice goal" from me at the conclusion of every lesson. Usually the practice goal will consist of 1 or 2 songs from the red book. Their objective is to work on their practice goal at home and come back to their lesson the following week able to play it to the best of their ability. Students will record their practice goals in the practice chart in the back of their books at the end of each lesson.
How much should my child practice?
I know that kids are busier then ever these days with homework and other activities that they participate in outside of school. I ask that they simply fit practicing in when they are able to. 15-20 minutes per day about 4 days a week is a good place to start. They can absolutely practice more than that if they wish to of course. At-home practice is crucial to their success. They especially need this practice time the first few weeks of band to build up their facial muscles to be able to make the best sounds on their instruments.
